| I.M. Beck's "moaning" The Times - Wednesday 10th May, 1995. Having read Ms Sylvana Zarb Darmanin's letter on April 26, I was amazed how certain people hide behind words. Claiming to be a "tolerant" person and not a hunter obviously implies she is pro-hunting. Why didn't she write this in the first place? How can anyone possibly be tolerant to the killing of innocent life in the disguise of tradition, hobby, and to add contradiction, sport? As for the private areas owned by the hunters that she mentioned, do these also include protected areas and nature reserves? Anyway, if she cannot stand I.M. Beck's "moaning", she should not read his column in the first place. I.M. Beck moan on. I personally read all the "moaning" letters written by hunters. They convince me more that being anti-hunting is the only reasonable way to be, though they obviously have every right to express their views in writing. Justice and birds The Times - Monday 22nd May, 1995. Mr Lino Farrugia (treasurer GhKNK) mentioned the invasion of private property by police in his article (May 16). Invasion of private property is also done where other forms of illegal activities take place. Does Mr Farrugia believe the police should not enter homes of suspected drug dealers? I doubt it. Mr Farrugia said the association had the backing of those who believed that justice had to be seen to be done. When will justice be done with the birds? Environmental confusion The Times - Friday 3rd November, 1995. Nowadays, the word "environment" has become just another cliche'. We have "conservationist" hunters, cat-trapping bird watchers, irrigated land being sold to soft drinks makers, rain forest destroying multinational corporations sponsoring clean-up activities, the law itself prohibiting the setting free of confiscated protected birds until a court sentence is delivered (thus resulting in the caged death of some of the birds) etc. We have the general mentality that animals are simply man's possession, with no right to life. We have people whose idea of environment is simply that of not littering streets. While recognising the fact that a lot has been achieved in environmental awareness and education, unfortunately ignorance and apathy still prevail. Law enforcement at Chadwick Lakes The Times - Saturday 11th November, 1995. On October 22, I visited Chadwick Lakes and was disgusted at seeing more than 20 children accompanied by adults collecting tadpoles and frogs and putting them in jars. It is useless having laws which are not enforced. One possible solution could be the stationing of a warden at such places to prevent this. Education is not enough considering the selfishness of many people. Such "adults" only adhere to the law if there is a risk of being fined on the spot. Turkey for Christmas? The Times - Saturday 23rd December, 1995. It is quite paradoxical how most Christians celebrate a birth with a killing at Christmas. Christmas is still Christmas without a turkey holocaust. |
